Cytokinesis

Definition: Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm. Cytokinesis is different in both plant and animal eukaryotic cells.

In animal cells, cytokinesis happens by the cell membrane being drawn into the cell until the cytoplasm is pinched into two equal parts. Each part contains its own nucleus and organelles.

In plant cells, the cell membrance is not flexible enough to draw inward because of the rigid cell wall. Instead, a cell plate formes between the divided nuclei that develops into cell membrane. A cell wall then forms in between the two new membrane.
