Interphase

G1 is the first phase of 'interphase'. During G1 (which means growth), the cell simply grows in size and begins to synthesize new proteins and organells necessary to divide.

is the second phase of 'interphase'. During S (which stands for synthesize) new DNA is synthesized. This happens because the chormosomes are being replicated for the new 'daughter' cell.

G2 is the final phase of 'interphase'. During G2 (which also stands for growth), many of the organells and molecules required for cell division are produced.
